Rupert Muldoon:
‘Under the River is a totally different perspective than the other paintings. There’s a wear on the Avon where the sound is absolutely incredible and just before the water falls over the wear, it becomes quite still and you can see into the depths; and all the weeds moving gently beneath. And it’s that image that I had in my mind when I walked back to the studio and started this painting.
‘Under the River’ is painted as though looking down from a bridge into the depths, through the suspended layers in the water. The shrinking of distance is enhanced by the absence of a horizon line. Exploiting the reflective surface of water, allows one to mirror, invert, and disorientate – delivering the abstract image.’
