The 1st Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722) is one of England’s most remarkable noblemen. A statesman and a soldier, he is best known as the commander responsible for the English victory at the battle of Blenheim in 1704 and for his family seat, Blenheim Palace which was rewarded to him as a gift from a grateful nation and built by the Baroque architect, Sir John Vanbrugh.
This mezzotint is taken from the original portrait of the 1st Duke, painted by Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723).
