A Mid-19th Century Black Lacquer Panel

A mid-19th century rectangular black lacquer panel, made for the export market, the surface decoration of finely carved soapstone and mother-of-pearl, a pagoda by a blossoming tree, the imaginary landscape including figures playing and dancing, courtiers seated at a games table beneath two cranes in flight.

For centuries the Chinese have been using inlay as a means to decorate furniture, pictures as well as other arts and crafts. This picture represents the art of ‘high inlay’, meaning that the pearl and stone extend beyond the surface of the panel rather than creating one, even surface. This way, perspective is enhanced and a more three-dimensional effect is created. The colours are evenly distributed, the carving delicately executed and in very good condition.

Now set in an ebonised ripple moulded frame with water-gilded slip and edge.
