19th Century Pair of Marine Paintings

£1,750

SOLD

A pair of late 19th Century marine oils each depicting a warship broadside, one flying the Red Ensign.

Oils on panels set in ebonsied moulded frames

This pair of marine seascapes depicts 18th century warships, one turning to port side in rough waters; the other in a still sea. These were painted at the end of the 19th century, inspired by the works of great British marine artists such as Peter Monamy and John Luny. Paying homage to Georgian traditions, this unknown artist has captured the mood of 18th century naval art. The soft colours employed in both sea and sky enable us to focus on the vessels – these are ship portraits, after all.
