This painting is housed in a period giltwood frame (in original condition).

George Lambert (1700-1765) was born in Kent and during his studies attracted much attention for his abilities in landscape painting. He obtained a great reputation as a theatre scene painter, working in both The Lincoln’s Inn Fields Theatre and The Covent Garden Theatre in London.

He was a member of the Society of Artists of Great Britain, exhibited with them in 1761 and the three following years; during the same period he contributed to the Academy exhibitions. In 1765 Lambert and other members seceded and formed the Incorporated Society of Artists of Great Britain, of which he was elected the first president. His close friend William Hogarth considered him to be a rival to Claude Lorrain, due to his use of soft light over verdant landscapes, a quality which can be clearly seen in this particular painting by a close follower.
