Though the French tea-drinking tradition has never been quite as extensive as the British one and coffee has for decades been the hot beverage of choice for the French, tea did play a significant role among the bourgeoisie during the 19th century. To this end, households and cafes had to provide storage that would extend the shelf-life of the leaves. Air tight canisters, such as this, prevented mould by being exposed to air, light and moisture. As with most utilitarian objects made at this time the surface has been decorated in a manner unrelated tot the actual purpose of the canister, yet enhancing its appeal.
