An Early 19th Century Paris Porcelain Trumpet Vase

A fine early nineteenth century Paris porcelain trumpet vase, with polychrome and gilded glazes throughout in the classical manner the square base with marbled decoration.

The term Paris Porcelain refers not to a single manufacturer but to more than 30 companies working from the 1770s through to the 1870s in the north-east side of the city. The King’s factory at Sevres enjoyed something of a monopoly on porcelain manufacturing and Parisian makers made wares in imitation of these designs for the bourgeois classes. The King had initially enacted competition laws to protect his concern; however, more latitude was granted to the Paris kilners as the overwhelming desire for porcelain bolstered the French economy. In time the Paris factories developed their own aristocratic clientele. And finally, the French Revolution brought them the autonomy they had always desired as the Sevres monopoly was ended.

Paris porcelain from the early nineteenth century rare bears a maker’s mark. It is characterised by simple gilt boders of Classical motifs, scattered flowers, painted scenes of landscapes, monochrome figures and painted imitations of hard stones as on the foot of this example.
