A Pair of Late 18th Century Polychrome Faience Chargers

A pair of late 18h century faience chargers, having polychrome decoration of flowers upon a white ground.

With good old restorations in places, not effecting the surface decoration.

Faience, originally an Italian product of tin-glazed pottery (called majolica), was first reproduced by the Dutch. What is referred to as ‘Delftware’ is a type of such tin-glazed pottery and, to this day, remains much in demand among collectors. It was, however, not until the 18th century that faience was able to bear a variety of very rich colours. This was made possible by an overglaze enamel which could be fired at lower temperatures.

The complementary colours of yellow and blue as well as red and green are especially vibrant in this beautiful pair of chargers.
