A mid-16th century blue and white glazed porcelain plate, having a shaped edge, with foliate decoration and depicting a stylised scorpion to the centre. With character mark to the underside.
Generally speaking, the scorpion is believed to be the symbol for transition, passion and all things defensive. However, one of the most significant meanings attached to the scorpion, is that of protection and a warrior spirit. At this, the scorpion has been said to swing its sting in a movement similar to that of Tai Chi Zen Warriors – striking both silently and decisively.
