A mid-19th century black glazed porcelain vase of baluster form.

Black glazes are extremely durable and were, in the beginning, used by the Chinese middle classes as household wares. Due to their extraordinary decorative value, they eventually became popular with the upper classes. Wares with glazes in shades from dark ochre to black are achieved using iron-rich clay. The greater the iron content, the darker the surface.
