This Satsuma vase was manufactured in Japan during the Meiji Period and was produced for export to Western markets. Earlier pieces of Satsuma stem from as early as 1600, but are less elaborate in design. It is later examples, such as this, that became one of the most recognised export wares of the period. Today, they continue to be highly collected owing to their decorative appeal.
