A Mid-Century Silvered Standing Lamp in the Early Baroque Taste
£1,950
SOLD
A finely turned, cast, silvered standing or standard lamp, in the early Baroque manner, taking its form from an early pricket stick and set upon a triangular plinth base.
The Baroque style, first made popular in Italy around 1600, favoured exaggerated motion, drama, spectacle and illusion. Whilst the early years of the Baroque were not as grand as the later ones, the straight lines of the Renaissance were already replaced by curves to create effects of chiaroscuro (light and shade), symmetry gave way to more irregular designs and texture overrode structure.
