An Empire Writing Desk or Bureau Plat

£4,900

SOLD

An early nineteenth century finely figured walnut bureau plat, the overhanging top inset with a black leather surface and two side sliding candle slides covered in the same, above a configuration of long and short drawers, each with lock escutcheon and rectangular brass handles, all raised on square tapering feet with brass mounts.

This desk is typical of early nineteenth century furniture for its sharp architectural lines. The walnut is very finely figured and represents the only ornament beyond the austere brass work. This is very much a trait of Empire furniture design.

The candlestick slides are an unusual attribute and can be used today for both candle lighting or for the placement of electric lamps.

Total Width with slides open: 73 inches (186 cm)
