An 18th Century Chinese Export Black Lacquer Bureau
£4,900
SOLD
A late 18th century black lacquer bureau on stand, the top, sides, and slope with gilded decoration of figures, foliage, pagodas and imaginary landscapes, and fitted with internal drawers and pigeon holes, above two short and one long drawer and set upon a modern stand with faceted cabriole legs.
Lacquer furniture such as this small bureau was made for the Export market throughout the 18th century. In addition to fine silks, paintings and porcelain, lacquer wares were traded at Canton and shipped back to Europe by merchants attempting to capitalise upon the Western hunger for all things Oriental at this time.
