A Three Tier Japanned Etagere

A chinoiserie three tier etagere, the black japanned frame with gilded decoration throughout.

There was a revival of the art of japanning in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. As the imperial nations became increasingly established in the East, Chinese and Japanese art continued to capture the imaginations of the European peoples.

This etagere was made at the turn of the twentieth century, the Edwardian era, and the chinoiserie decoration has been well executed by a European hand.
