A Pair of 19th Century Oak Club Stick Stands

A good large pair of late nineteenth century oak club hall stands, each with twelve divisions for umbrellas and canes, set upon post supports with copper drip trays.

This large pair of stick stands was probably made for a club entrance hall and would have flanked the lobby area around the front door. Made from oak in a simple yet balanced manner, this model typifies the ideals of the Aesthetic Movement in design. Owen Jones and Christopher Dresser sought an alternative to the recycling of traditional styles at the end of the nineteenth century, instead promoting a utilitarian approach to design where restrained form suited the needs of the modern home. In this respect, the Aesthetic Movement was a reformist style which bridged the 19th and 20th centuries.
