A Mid-century Painted & Parcel Gilded Wine Table
£3,500
SOLD
A very fine mid-20th century cream painted and parcel gilded wine table, of rectangular form, the frieze with raised fretwork Greek key motif, all set upon square tapering legs, supporting a lower shelf and retaining the original green marble top.
Although made in the mid-20th century, the form of this table relates entirely to late 18th century North Italian console table designs. The Classical frieze, set above shaped square tapering legs draws inspiration directly from pieces made in the 1780s and 1790s during the Neo-classical revival prior to the emergence of Empire style.
This table belongs to the luxury class of furniture produced shortly after the Second World War as interior decorators and designers sought to recapture the colour and fantasy of previous centuries. The surface decoration is all finely water-gilded and the piece retains its intricately veined green marble top.
