A Regency Period mahogany tea table, the D-shaped cross-banded swivel hinged top set upon a frieze with ebony inlaid Greek key motif, set on four turned columns and terminating with four splayed legs, set upon castors.
Tea drinking, in England, soared in popularity in the 18th century and by the 19th century, tables such as this were being made specifically for entertaining. This versatile piece of furniture was designed either to sit against a wall or to be wheeled on its castors into the middle of the room for social gatherings over tea. This particular table has been designed so that the four splayed legs allow comfortable seating: it is devoid of cumbersome legs. With its rich mahogany and Neo-Classical themes such as the column legs and Greek key motif, this table is a good example of Regency Period furniture, displaying the restrained form which was fashionable at this time.
