A 19th Century Regency Period Brighton Pavilion Bamboo Table

A rare early 19th century ‘Brighton Pavilion’ style bamboo occasional table, of hexagonal form, the canework top bordered by bamboo above six trellised sides, decorated with shredded bamboo in the chinoiserie manner.

This table relates very closely to furniture made in the early 19th century for The Brighton Pavilion, the former royal residence built for George, Prince of Wales who became Prince Regent in 1811. It was built in the Indo-Saracenic style which was prevalent in India for most of the 19th century and the current appearance of the Pavilion, with its domes and minarets, is the work of architect John Nash, who extended the building in 1815. The interiors celebrate the exotic with bold chinoiserie chambers in which bamboo furniture, closely relating to this table, can be found.
