A late 19th century red lacquer alter table of long rectangular form and set upon four shaped legs in the traditional manner.
The Chinese have been producing furniture evolving independently of Western designs since 1500-1000 BC. With their vast forest resources, they based production on three principles of construction: frame and panel, yoke and rack and bamboo processing techniques. Traditionally wooden pieces were joined without the use of glue or nails since fluctuating temperatures, high humidity as well as the oily nature of Chinese timber did not respond well with them.
This example has been embellished through the application of a brilliant red lacquer. In Chinese tradition the colour red is associated with positive forces, such as good luck and happiness.
