A 19th century carved and painted centre table in the Rococo manner, the sides of serpentine form and raised on cabriole legs. The table retains its original breche violette marble top.
Extracted from the town of Serravezza, near to Carrara, Italy, breche violette is a very heterogeneous marble: a compound of hues going from white to dark violet passing through shades of pink and green.
Applied in some of the most impressive buildings in the world, such as Versailles, Le Musée du Louvre and many important churches in Italy, breche violette marble was regularly incorporated in the most monumental architectural schemes of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
In this example, the purple veining of the breche violette top contrasts perfectly with the white painted rocaille table base. It has been perfectly cut into a serpentine form with a moulded edge.
