A Pair of Mid-20th Century Cockpen Cast Iron Garden Chairs

A Pair of Mid-century painted cast iron garden armchairs in the Chinese Chippendale Cockpen manner, The backs and arms of cracked- ice form, supported upon legs topped with C-scroll motifs.
This unusual pair of cast iron armchairs dates to the middle of the 20th Century. The ‘cockpen’ chair relates entirely to Chinese furniture designs of the 17th and 18th Centuries and the form was taken up by Thomas Chippendale (1718-1779). His publication, The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker’s Director, clearly shows the designs from which these chairs are derived.
