An 18th Century Louis XVI Period Fruitwood Commode
£3,900
SOLD
A charming late 18th century fruitwood commode in the Classical manner, the cleated top above three drawers each mounted with lion mask handles, the whole piece raised on square tapering feet.
This piece was made at the end of the reign of Louis XVI, who was executed in 1793. The pure form of this piece dates it to the time of the French Revolution when form became more restrained as a reaction against the excesses of the Rococo Period in furniture design.
(The lion mask handles on the bottom drawer differ very slightly in design from those on the two upper drawers.)
