A fine 18th century George III Period kingwood bedside cabinet or nightstand, the shaped top with detailed marquetry of trophies above three drawers, all raised on lightly formed cabriole legs.
This model relates to designs by Ince & Mayhew, a partnership founded in London by William Ince (died 1804) and John Mayhew (1736–1811). The company is recorded as trading from premises in Soho from 1759 until 1803. Ince & Mayhew are best remembered for their publication, ‘The Universal System of Household Furniture’ which was dedicated to the Duke of Marlborough and published in parts from 1759 – 1763 as a rival alternative to Thomas Chippendale’s ‘Director’.
Major commissions include the furnishings at Crichel in Dorset as well as Daylesford House in Worcestershire for Warren Hastings. Perhaps their most notable work is the furniture provided for The Duchess of Devonshire at Chatsworth House.
The partnership was successful and a happy one – both men ultimately married two sisters, in a double wedding, at the Church of St. James’s, Piccadilly in 1762.
