A 19th Century Empire Period Mahogany Commode
£3,900
SOLD
An early 19th century finely figured mahogany commode, the original black fossil marble top above three short drawers and two long drawers with lion mask handles and raised upon lion paw feet.
This commode has restrained, symmetrical and logical lines which, in true Empire style, create a tremendously powerful form. The largely unadorned rectangular facade is only interrupted by brass handles in the form of lion heads. Furthermore, the feet of the piece are shaped like lion’s paws. The lion was as much a symbol of power in Roman art as it became to the Imperial Nations of Europe in the 19th century.
