We are excited to present a new Rococo acquisition here at the gallery from the Louis XV era. It is the second piece I’ve explored so far in my under-a-minute series I’m calling Langston Shorts.
The Louis XV open armchair, or fauteuil to use the French term, is one of the most recognisable forms in furniture history. The fluid form epitomises the Rococo style – a succession of C-scrolls: there is not one straight line in the design. The slender cabriole legs are a feat of engineering as they support not only the upper parts of the chair but also the sitter.
Who could resist the curvaceous elegance of this auburn beauty?
