Carnaby was the son of William Haggerston of Haggerston Castle Northumberland and Anne Constable only daughter of Sir Philip Constable of Everingham Yorkshire. He married Elizabeth Middleton of Stockeld, Yorkshire in November 1721. In the portrait presented here he is depicted in a child’s riding habit of the early 18th century complete with plumed tricorn hat, gauntlet gloves and riding crop. His tomb in St Maurice’s Church, Ellingham, Northumberland cites: “A gentleman of uncommon erudition, clear and penetrating wit, and solid judgment. Of an extensive and well guided charity to the distressed, universal benevolence to all men and adorned with every Christian and social virtue. He died July 17th 1756…Aged 59”
