A Rare 18th Century Portrait Hatchment of Charles I and his Adherents

An early 18th century lozenge shaped portrait depicting Charles I and the armorials of his supporters. Set within a carved gilt wood frame.

Dimensions refer to the frame.

The following outline of the arms depicted on the painting has been provided by Somerset Herald of The College of Arms in London. They are numbered clockwise from the top:

1. The arms of the Order of the Garter. Argent a Cross Gules (St George) impaling the Stuart
Royal Arms all within the Garter and surmounted by a Crown.

2. The Stuart Royal Arms surrounded by the Garter and surmounted by a duke or Royal duke’s
coronet.

3. Bacon, Gules on a Chief Argent two Mullets Sable quartering Quaplade, Barry of Six Or and
Azure a Bend Gules

4. George (Villiers), 2nd Duke of Buckingham, KG 1649, died 1687 Argent on a Cross Gules five
Escallops Or within the Garter and surmounted by the coronet of a marquess. His father, also
George, the 1st Duke, murdered 1628 might be a better candidate for an adherent of Charles I
but he was not a KG. The use of the marqess’s coronet instead of a duke’s can only be an error.

5. Philip (Herbert) 4th Earl of Pembroke, K.G. 1608, died 1649/50, brother of number 9, Per pale
Azure and Gules three Lions rampant Argent within a Bordure compony Argent and Gules a
crescent Or for difference [the cadency mark of a second son] all within the Garter and
surmounted by an earl’s coronet.

6. George (Hay), 2nd Earl of Kinnoull, styled Viscount Dupplin 1632-34, succeeded to earldom
1634, Argent three Escutcheons Gules surmounted by the coronet of a viscount. He refused to
sign the Solemn League and Covenant in 1644.

7. Dudley (North) third Baron North, baptised 1582, died 1666, Azure a Lion passant Or between
three Fleurs-de-lis Argent.

8. Robert (Sydney), 1st Earl of Leicester, KG 1616, died 1626, Or a Pheon Azure within the Garter
and surmounted by an earl’s coronet. (His son, Robert (Sydney) 2nd Earl of Leicester ,
1595-1659, might, although he swore allegiance to the Commonwealth in 1650, be a more
likely candidate to be described as an adherent of Charles I but he was never a Knight of the
Garter).

9. William (Herbert) 3rd Earl of Pembroke, KG 1603, d. 1630, elder brother of number 5, Per pale
Azure and Gules three Lions rampant Argent within a Bordure compony Argent and Gules, all
within the Garter and surmounted by an earl’s coronet.

10. James (Stuart), Duke of Lennox later Duke of Richmond, KG 1633, died 1655, Azure three
Fleur-de-lis Or a Bordure Gules charged with eight buckles Or quartering Or a Fess chequy
Argent and Azure a Bordure engrailed Gules on an inescutcheon Argent a Saltire engrailed
between four Roses Gules.

11. George Abbot, Archbishop of Canterbury, died 1633. See of Canterbury impaling Abbot, Gules
a Chevron Argent between three Pears slipped Or.

12. Unidentified, the Stuart Royal Arms impaling Argent three Lions passant guardant in pale
Azure, all beneath a Crown. I can only think that this is intended to represent the Channel
Islands and their arms Gules three Lions passant guardant in pale Or have been shown in the
wrong tinctures.
